
This was also taken in the Wood of Cree. I've no idea what the name of the fungus is, but it's as hard as concrete.
Possibly a viewer might identify?
Since I didn't see any photographic record for Ayrshire, I thought I'd put one up.

Hmmm...I love to Google for things and the first hit typing in "tree fungi" happened to come up with a site from the UK. Here are the pics and types of fungi they have:

I thought it might perhaps be "hoof fungus", but not sure. To me, it looks like clamshells!
I had checked the site and hoof fungus had been one of the possibilities discussed. Just hoping someone who 'knows' might comment!
Hubby says it is hoof fungus (Fomes fomentarius), great for making tinder...apparently!
